Trump Imposes 25% Tariffs on Brazil Imports

The United States is imposing 25% tariffs on imports from Brazil effective July 22 after a yearlong investigation by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative found unfair trade practices, including lax anti-corruption enforcement and unfair Brazilian tariffs. The order exempts coffee, beef, oranges, orange juice, some energy products, and aerospace parts.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated the action ensures American workers compete on a level playing field, noting extensive negotiations failed to resolve issues. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reacted with indignation, blaming political rival Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, a Trump ally.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Lula of not negotiating in good faith and putting ego ahead of Brazilian welfare. The tariffs use Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. The Supreme Court previously ruled against Trump's 50% tariffs on Brazil under a different law, though Trump-Lula relations improved after a May White House visit.
