Trump Halts Hormuz Ship Guidance Amid Oil Crisis

President Trump abruptly paused U.S. efforts to guide ships through the Strait of Hormuz, one day after the operation began. The president said in a social media post that the change came at the request of Pakistan and other countries amid "tremendous military success." Trump emphasized that the U.S. blockade would "remain in full force and effect" in the strategic waterway through which 20% of global oil and liquid natural gas normally passes.

The pause comes as 1,600 ships remain stranded in dangerous conditions, severely disrupting global energy markets. Oil prices have spiked as a result, with U.S. gasoline prices averaging $4.48 per gallon. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had earlier defended the mission, calling Iran's strait blockade "a criminal act" that threatens the global economy and freedom of navigation in international waters.

Shipping companies remain wary despite U.S. military presence in the region. Jack Kennedy of S&P Global Market Intelligence noted most firms may not feel safe enough to send vessels through the strait as Iran "retains capacity to deter most transit" with asymmetric military capabilities. The economic toll extends beyond energy, with dozens of countries affected by the maritime crisis that has trapped thousands of sailors since February.
