A driver rammed a truck into Temple Israel's building in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, killing the attacker before police intervened. The attack rattled one of the nation's largest Reform congregations, which hosts more than 12,000 members across 3,500 families. The incident unfolded on a Friday night when over 1,000 worshippers gathered for services.

Founded in 1941, Temple Israel emerged from a split with a congregation that did not prioritize Zionism, according to historian Howard Lupovitch. The founders aimed to demonstrate commitment to a Jewish state, a mission that helped the temple grow into a vibrant community. Its focus on ritual, song, and joy attracts families seeking a summer‑camp‑style experience.

The temple serves a suburb where roughly a quarter of the 65,000 residents are Jewish, according to Arthur Horwitz. With a nursery and a K‑12 religious school, it offers education from pre‑kindergarten through high school. The community’s resilience has kept suburban Detroit’s Jewish life thriving, even after the exodus of families from the city in the 1960s.

Staff member Robyn Canvasser, who has worked at the temple for 22 years, described the place as a “joyous, happy, wonderful” environment that teaches love, kindness, and acceptance. She expressed horror at the attack but confidence that the community will endure. The incident underscores the vulnerability of religious sites and the importance of protecting places of worship.
