A 41-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, drove his vehicle into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, on Thursday before exchanging gunfire with security guards. The attacker was killed in the confrontation, which authorities described as a "targeted act of violence against the Jewish community."

About 140 preschool students and staff were safely evacuated from the building. One security guard was injured when struck by the vehicle but is expected to recover. The attack caused a fire inside the synagogue and prompted a federal search for explosives, though none were found.

Ghazali, born in Lebanon, entered the United States in 2011 and became a citizen in 2016. The attack occurred as antisemitic incidents nationwide have reached record levels, with over 9,300 cases reported in 2024 according to the Anti-Defamation League. The incident follows heightened tensions between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
