Lobga Rangzen, a dedicated Tibetan activist, tragically set himself on fire in front of the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan on July 2. The 52-year-old protester streamed the act live on Facebook, holding a Tibetan flag and distributing flyers demanding "FREE TIBET" and "CHINA OUT OF TIBET." His friend, Ngawang Tashi, learned of the event through a phone call and arrived at the hospital too late to see him alive.

Lobga Rangzen, whose name means "independence" in Tibetan, had a long history of activism, including a walk from New York to Washington for Tibetan rights in 2014 and volunteering for events involving the Dalai Lama. He fled Tibet in 1992 due to Chinese occupation and spent years in India before seeking asylum in the United States, where he devoted himself entirely to the cause of Tibetan independence. His self-immolation, the first known instance in the U.S., has brought renewed international attention to Tibet, with figures like Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez issuing statements of mourning.
