Opera Ventures Productions and Scottish Opera present The Galloping Cure, a bold new opera for the opioid age premiering at the Edinburgh International Festival. Composer Missy Mazzoli, librettist Royce Vavrek, and director Tom Morris reunite following their 2019 hit *Breaking the Waves*. Based on an original story by Karen Russell, the work follows Dr. Theresa Hart (Daniela Mack) in a struggling industrial town where a charismatic carnival leader, Lucky Mack (Justin Austin), offers miraculous relief via a carousel ride — the first one always free.

As the community succumbs to euphoria, addiction spirals into grotesque sacrifice. Conductor Stuart Stratford leads The Orchestra of Scottish Opera through Mazzoli's score, weaving club beats into richly textured orchestration. A haunting allegory for a worldwide epidemic, the production features Susan Bullock as the eccentric Ivona Kowalski and Gabrielle Turgeon as Theresa's daughter Noy.

Co-commissioned by major opera houses including San Francisco Opera and Canadian Opera Company, this contemporary fable evokes a darkly funny, devastating vision of a crumbling society. Part of the Anderson Opera Series, supported by James and Morag Anderson.
