Tennessee Man Wins $835,000 Free Speech Settlement

Larry Bushart, a Tennessee man jailed for 37 days over Facebook posts about Charlie Kirk's death, has secured an $835,000 settlement from the sheriff who detained him. The conservative activist's killing triggered nationwide social media commentary, but Bushart stood alone in facing felony charges for sharing memes that accused Kirk's organization of hate speech and included Trump's comments about school shootings.

The Perry County sheriff claimed Bushart threatened violence with his posts, setting bail at $2 million despite knowing the memes referred to a school shooting in Iowa, not Tennessee. This case joins a pattern of compensation for people penalized for commenting on Kirk's death, including a professor who received $500,000 and a public defender awarded $125,000.

Bushart's settlement represents one of the largest payouts in this growing legal saga around free speech boundaries. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression represented Bushart, arguing no one should be jailed over "harmless memes" just because authorities disagree with the message. The sheriff's office declined to comment on the resolution.
