Taiwan Leverages Ukrainian Drone Know‑How Amid Growing Informal Ties

A loose network of volunteers and defense executives is linking Taiwan and Ukraine despite the absence of official diplomatic or military relations. Former Taiwanese soldier Lee, now fighting in a Kyiv drone regiment, says his battlefield lessons could help Taiwan deter a future Chinese invasion. The informal exchanges sidestep sensitivities over Beijing’s “no‑limits” partnership with Moscow.

Ukrainian drone firms rely on Chinese components, yet Taiwan serves as a conduit for parts that China restricts from reaching Kyiv. In 2025 Taiwanese firms shipped 70,372 drones to the Czech Republic and 31,711 to Poland, most of which ultimately arrived in Ukraine via charitable donations. Companies such as Thunder Tiger have also sent prototypes for testing and are fielding Ukrainian‑derived designs for local production.

American drone makers Neros and Auterion are testing Ukrainian‑origin systems in Taiwan, while Ukrainian start‑ups partner with U.S. firms that sell the hardware to Taiwanese customers. These commercial links give Taiwan access to battle‑tested asymmetric tools, addressing long‑standing criticism of its slow defence innovation and providing a tangible boost to its emerging drone industry.
