Sibling Therapy Gains Attention as Estrangement Rises

Sibling therapy is moving into mainstream attention as experts weigh its risks and promise. A 2023 study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships analyzed 31,286 dyad-years and found 17.5 percent were characterized by estrangement between siblings, while 28.1 percent of respondents experienced at least one episode of estrangement.

Recent media coverage from NPR and The Atlantic, plus professional recognition from the American Psychological Association and the National Council on Family Relations, signals growing interest. Adults seek therapy for long-running conflict, cold relationships, or repeated blowups rooted in childhood roles and unequal parental treatment.

Therapy aims to clarify whether a relationship is salvageable or whether healthier detachment is needed. The SIBS intervention showed improved sibling relationship quality in a randomized control study, though evidence remains limited. Sessions can reopen conflict before resolution, especially when underlying issues involve deep-seated family narratives.

Sibling therapy is not a promise of reunion but a tool for deciding what contact is possible after years of tension, lowering damage when total repair is off the table.
