Russian lawmakers traveled to the United States for the first time since 2022 despite personal sanctions, as Moscow seeks warmer ties with Washington under President Trump.

Four members of Russia's State Duma, including Olympic champion Svetlana Zhurova and former Stalin adviser Vyacheslav Nikonov, arrived in New York after the State Department waived sanctions blocking their entry. The delegation avoided outspoken critics of the U.S., including those who threatened nuclear strikes over Ukraine support.

This diplomatic thaw follows a February 2025 meeting between top U.S. and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, where both sides discussed peace talks and financial investments. While no concrete agreements emerged, the sanctions waiver signals a cautious opening between the nations.
