Republican Super PACs Fuel Spending War in Maine House Race

Democrats are accusing Republicans of meddling in Maine's Second Congressional District primary through a mysterious super PAC that has poured over $500,000 into supporting progressive candidate Matt Dunlap. The spending comes as four Democrats compete to replace retiring Representative Jared Golden in one of the nation's most competitive House seats.

Golden narrowly won re-election in 2024 with just 50.3 percent of the vote, making this district the most Republican-leaning seat currently held by a Democrat. His retirement opened a path for Republicans to flip the seat, with former Governor Paul LePage already securing the GOP nomination with Trump's endorsement.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee backs state Senator Joe Baldacci, claiming Republicans fear facing him in November. Meanwhile, Real Change PAC's spending has targeted Baldacci specifically, using the same Wyoming address as other Republican-connected groups. Democrats counter that Baldacci benefits from over $900,000 in support from Project 218, a Democratic super PAC.

Tuesday's ranked-choice primary will determine which Democrat faces LePage in November. The spending battle reflects both parties' recognition that this seat could prove decisive in broader House control fights.
