Red Fox's 3,600-Mile Voyage Ends at Bronx Zoo

A red fox has found an unlikely sanctuary at the Bronx Zoo after a remarkable 3,600-mile journey across the Atlantic. The 2-year-old male, weighing about 11 pounds, was discovered last month aboard a cargo ship traveling from England's Port of Southampton to the Port of New York and New Jersey. Crew members found the fox hidden among vehicles on the M/V Tijuca, a massive car carrier that can hold up to 7,500 vehicles.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials called the fox a "sly stowaway" in a social media post. Agriculture specialists and wildlife experts transported the animal to the Bronx Zoo, where staff have experience rescuing wildlife intercepted at ports and airports. The fox, who has not been named, is currently convalescing on a diet of apples, sweet potatoes, insects, and mice while awaiting health clearance.

Zoo officials say the fox appears healthy and not stressed by his circumstances. If he passes quarantine and health tests, the zoo will find him a long-term home. Red foxes are among the world's most adaptable carnivores, native to Europe, Asia, North America, and parts of Africa. While unusual, this maritime adventure isn't unprecedented - a deadly Indian cobra was discovered on a cargo ship in New Jersey in 2015.
