Patel Sues Atlantic for $250M Over Drinking Claims

FBI Director Kash Patel has filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic over an article alleging excessive drinking and unexplained absences that jeopardized his position. The piece, titled "The FBI Director Is MIA," cited over two dozen anonymous sources and claimed Patel's conduct "often alarmed officials" at the FBI and Department of Justice.

The article, published Friday by author Sarah Fitzpatrick, detailed Patel's behavior leading the Federal Bureau of Investigation and alleged he had "earned a reputation for acting impulsively during high-stakes investigations." The White House denied the claims through press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who stated Patel "remains a critical player on the administration's law and order team."

Patel's lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, accuses The Atlantic of publishing "false and obviously fabricated allegations" despite being warned hours before publication that the central claims were "categorically false." The suit specifically refutes allegations about drinking at members-only clubs Ned's in Washington and the Poodle Room in Las Vegas, stating Patel "does not drink to excess" and this has "never been a source of concern across the government."

As a public figure, Patel faces a higher legal standard, needing to prove "actual malice" - that The Atlantic either knew the information was false or showed reckless disregard for its truth. This lawsuit joins a series of recent defamation actions from the Trump administration against major media outlets.
