Park Avenue Overhaul to Create Pedestrian Space

New York City unveiled two proposed designs for an 11-block stretch of Park Avenue between East 46th and East 57th Streets, plans that would remove two traffic lanes to double the width of the median. The redesign aims to transform the current inhospitable strip into a pedestrian-friendly space with walkways, trees, benches, and potentially protected bicycle lanes.

The project stems from the rehabilitation of Grand Central Terminal train beneath the avenue, requiring removal of the existing median. The Transportation Department estimates the overhaul will take at least five years to complete. Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized the initiative would "put the 'Park' back into Park Avenue" by creating usable public space.

Public opinion appears divided on the proposed changes. While some pedestrians expressed enthusiasm for more greenery and seating, others voiced concerns about increased traffic congestion. The city is gathering feedback through information tables and an online survey before finalizing the design that will reshape one of Manhattan's most iconic thoroughfares.
