Non-tenure track faculty at New York University walked out on strike Monday, marking the first walkout since they unionized in 2024. The union, representing approximately 950 full-time members, demands higher pay, enhanced job security, and help with New York's high housing costs. The dispute centers on compensation disparities; union spokesman Brendan Hogan stated members earn roughly 60% of what tenure-track colleagues make while bearing 29% of the teaching load.

NYU countered that it is offering starting salaries for assistant professors above $90,000 annually, positioning it as the highest such salary at any private university in the country. The university insists classes will proceed with substitute instructors for the over 29,000 undergraduate students, calling the strike "fundamentally unnecessary." However, Hogan countered that providing adequate instruction, especially for students needing to complete theses due in mid-April, would require a "miracle" without the striking faculty. The strike, authorized by a 90% vote in February, continues until the union's bargaining committee secures acceptable terms.
