New York City hotel housekeepers will earn over $100,000 annually under a groundbreaking contract between the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council and the Hotel Association of New York City. The 8-year agreement, ratified Monday, averts a potential strike during the World Cup and America 250 celebrations while increasing wages by more than 50%. Housekeepers will earn roughly $61 an hour by 2034, up from slightly below $40 an hour.

The deal includes full health-care coverage for 27,000 workers and their families, addressing soaring living costs in NYC where consumer prices rose 4.6% annually. Union president Rich Maroko called it the largest wage increase in the union's nearly 100-year history. Hotel owners face rising labor expenses and lost revenue from 20,000 fewer rooms since the pandemic, with occupancy rates holding near 84%.

Labor groups across NYC have pushed aggressively for higher pay this year amid inflation outpacing the national rate. The contract follows recent strikes by nurses, NYU faculty and Long Island Rail Road workers. Mayor Zohran Mamdani backed the deal, saying it delivers "life-changing financial stability" to hospitality workers who keep the city running.

Hotel rates may rise as operators pass on costs, though NYC already commands the nation's highest average room rates at $335 nightly. The agreement sets a new benchmark for service-sector wages in America's most expensive city.
