Mayor Zohran Mamdani plans to open New York City's first city-owned grocery store in East Harlem at La Marqueta, fulfilling a campaign pledge to create five such stores across the boroughs. The initiative comes as the city faces a budget deficit and requires $70 million in capital funding that needs City Council approval. Critics including supermarket owner John Catsimatidis warn against potential harm to private businesses, while experts like Columbia professor Stephen Zagor note grocery operations typically have small profit margins and may require long-term subsidies.

City officials examined different models including Defense Department commissary stores before launching the procurement process this summer. Local Council member Elsie Encarnacion supports the plan as a critical first step, noting growing lines at food pantries across the district. The store will operate without displacing current La Marqueta vendors and could eventually expand to a network of 20 city-owned markets if successful.
