NYC Bank Robbery Spree Nets Just $605 in 5 Days

A 33-year-old man is accused of attempting to rob six Chase branches across New York City over five days, police say. Gustavo DeJesus Torres allegedly handed tellers threatening notes demanding cash at locations in Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. In three attempts, he left empty-handed, making off with only $605 total.

Torres's spree included a $320 take from Jackson Heights and $265 from Flatbush, with a mere $20 grabbed during a Harlem robbery. The Police Department released security photos showing Torres, a balding man with a beard, sometimes wearing a mask during the alleged crimes. The notes warned people would get hurt if tellers didn't comply, though he never claimed to be armed.

Court records suggest this isn't Torres's first brush with bank robbery charges. In 2021, a man of the same name was arrested in New Jersey for a $6,000 Chase heist, and last month he faced charges for a $600 TD Bank robbery in TriBeCa. Despite the multiple attempts across the city, Torres's total haul of $605 falls far short of the potential $6,000 from his 2021 case, highlighting the limited success of his recent alleged crime spree.
