Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and Mayor Zohran Mamdani clashed publicly on Tuesday. Mamdani again called Netanyahu a war criminal in a CNN interview, while Netanyahu released a video falsely accusing the mayor of supporting Hamas and inciting riots against Jewish New Yorkers.

Mamdani, New York's first Muslim mayor and a critic of Netanyahu, has condemned Hamas as a terrorist organization and called the Oct. 7, 2023 attack a "horrific war crime." No riots targeting Jewish New Yorkers have occurred since he took office in November. Netanyahu faces an ICC arrest warrant for war crimes in Gaza, which he denies.

In a 22-minute CNN interview with Christiane Amanpour, Mamdani said he owed New Yorkers his honest views, calling Netanyahu "a war criminal and an architect of a horrific genocide." He had pledged to arrest Netanyahu if he came to New York, but later said the city lacked authority and challenged the federal government to act.

Netanyahu, amid an electoral campaign, has frequently condemned Mamdani as a danger to Jewish New Yorkers. Mamdani's stance has caused unease among many Jews but drawn support from progressives. He attended a Yom Kippur break-fast at Ruth Messinger's home on Monday.
