A gunman who barricaded himself inside a veterinary hospital in Midland, Texas died Friday following a shooting that killed one person and injured at least 11 others. Law enforcement responded around 8 a.m. to reports of gunfire from the building on West Wall Street, near U.S. Highway 80.

Approximately 100 police officers and a SWAT team surrounded the building as the standoff stretched for hours. Mayor Lori Blong confirmed the suspect was contained, calling it an all-hands-on-deck response. Midland Memorial Hospital treated nine victims, with four in surgery and five in stable condition before lifting lockdown around 11:20 a.m.

The incident disrupted operations at nearby businesses, including the Grand Texan Hotel & Convention Center where staff reported traffic blockages. The veterinary hospital and surrounding budget hotels faced significant operational challenges during the multi-hour lockdown.

Local authorities continue investigating the motive while the community grapples with the violence that struck a typically quiet West Texas city about 57 miles from New Mexico.
