New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended his first rental rip-off hearing in the Bronx, sitting down privately with three tenants before a public gathering of hundreds. The mayor listened to complaints about rats, broken heating, mold, and leaky faucets from residents frustrated with unresponsive landlords. Mamdani, who was himself a tenant until three months ago, has made affordable housing a centerpiece of his administration.

Before the formal hearing began, Mamdani met privately with Ann Maitlin and two other Bronx residents who detailed their housing nightmares. Maitlin had prepared a three-minute speech about vermin, roaches, and dangerous wooden floors in her apartment. The auditorium at Fordham University filled with hundreds of tenants waiting for the mayor, creating a concert-like atmosphere before community leader Joanne Grell introduced him.

The event took a tense turn when NYCHA residents protested, demanding attention to public housing issues. Protesters wearing T-shirts reading "Mayor Mamdani don't care about NYCHA residents" disrupted the proceedings, criticizing the focus on privately-owned apartments. Mamdani insisted he welcomes NYCHA residents' stories while explaining he had spent part of the day listening to 311 calls, including recycling questions that drew laughter from the audience.
