Artist Mark Bradford has completed a 38‑foot, 13‑canvas mural titled “City of the Big Shoulders” for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The work, which took five years, maps migration routes and structural racism using reclaimed materials such as billboard strips and salon paper. Installed in the atrium, the piece commands the space with a blend of muted blacks, ochre and a striking lake‑blue swirl.

The $850 million Obama Center, built on a former park parcel, has sparked debate over gentrification, tree removal and wetland disruption. Despite protests, the foundation views the art program as integral, commissioning 30 contemporary creators including Kiki Smith and Theaster Gates. Bradford’s mural, inspired by Carl Sandburg’s poem and 1930s WPA hues, reinforces the complex’s narrative of urban resilience.

Visitors will encounter Bradford’s 300‑pound canvases alongside Julie Mehretu’s glass window, creating a significant high‑profile cultural draw that could boost tourism revenue for Chicago’s South Side. The centerpiece’s visibility from public walkways also gives the Obama Foundation a tangible asset for fundraising and branding, cementing the center’s role as a flagship civic development and community engagement initiative.
