Manhattan Council Race Awaits Ranked‑Choice Verdict

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s endorsed candidate, Lindsey Boylan, faced community activist Carl Wilson in Manhattan Third District special City Council election. With 99% of ballots counted, Wilson led Boylan 43% to 26%, while two other contenders split the remainder. No contender reached the 50% threshold, triggering a ranked‑choice tabulation that won’t be completed until May 5. The Board of Elections will release the final tally on May 5.

The race has become a proxy battle between Mamdani and Council Speaker Julie Menin, who backs Wilson. Outside groups poured more than $450,000 into Wilson’s side, compared with roughly $25,000 for Boylan. Endorsements from labor clubs, city officials and former mayoral campaign staff bolstered Wilson, while Boylan relied on the mayor’s political network and a single Working Families Party PAC. Wilson’s labor backing includes key teachers' unions.

Beyond the immediate seat, the outcome determines who will finish Erik Bottcher’s term through December and sets the stage for a June Democratic primary that decides the 2029‑lasting council seat. Boylan would break a decades‑long line of gay representation in a district that includes the historic Stonewall site, a factor that has energized local activists. Both candidates have pledged to address rising housing costs.
