Maine Senate Race Turns Into Collins vs Platner Showdown

Governor Janet Mills abruptly withdrew from Maine's Senate race Thursday, clearing the path for Graham Platner, a 41-year-old progressive oysterman and political newcomer, to face Republican Senator Susan Collins in what promises to be one of the most expensive Senate contests of 2026.

The two-term governor's decision amounted to a tacit acknowledgment that she lacked the funding and support to defeat Platner despite having the backing of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Collins, running for her sixth term, enters the general election with over $10 million in cash and a planned $42 million investment from a Republican super PAC. Maine supported Kamala Harris over Donald Trump by roughly seven percentage points in 2024.

Republicans are already targeting Platner's vulnerabilities—online remarks he's apologized for and a chest tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol he had covered last fall. The race will test whether voters prioritize experience or seek a new populist voice. Collins' fate may hinge on whether voters blame her for aligning with Trump or credit her for bringing resources home to Maine.
