Kean's Mystery Absence Exposes Congressional Health Secrecy

Representative Thomas H. Kean Jr. has vanished from Capitol Hill for two months, missing critical votes on the war in Iran, a warrantless surveillance program, and the farm bill. The New Jersey Republican says only that he is dealing with a personal medical issue, offering no timeline for his return. Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed concerns, stating there was "of course" no issue with Kean's fitness to serve.

Kean's unexplained absence represents the most extreme example of how congressional health remains a black box. While presidents release annual physical results and disclose medications, lawmakers typically provide zero public information about their health or ability to do their jobs. Medical ethicists argue this lack of transparency fails voters. "Every American should expect that elected representatives are competent to do the job they were elected for," said NYU's Arthur Caplan, calling Kean's extended silence "totally unacceptable."

Kean is not alone. Senator Mitch McConnell never explained multiple public freezing episodes. Senator Dianne Feinstein concealed serious shingles complications before dying in office. When Senator John Fetterman openly discussed depression treatment, he later regretted the transparency. The lower bar for Congress exists because government can function with one incapacitated member, but voters in competitive districts like Kean's may soon render their own judgment at the ballot box.
