K-Pop Industry Faces Stadium Shortage in South Korea

South Korea faces a critical shortage of concert venues as global demand for K-pop performances surges. BTS began their world tour in a 22-year-old soccer stadium, highlighting how the country's music industry juggernaut lacks adequate infrastructure despite generating record ticket sales of $1.2 billion last year.

A dedicated 28,000-seat concert arena has been delayed repeatedly since 2013, with completion now pushed to 2030. The K-Culture Valley project, initially projected to cost $1 billion, has been hampered by legal troubles, administrative dysfunction, and political scandals. This shortage has forced South Korea to turn to unconventional venues like the 40,000-seat Goyang Stadium.

The venue shortage has significant economic consequences. Fans pay premiums for tickets when shows are held in inadequate spaces, and international superstars have skipped South Korea due to lack of suitable venues. Ironically, Goyang Stadium, once running an annual deficit of $1.3 million, now generates surpluses of $6.8 million by hosting major acts.
