Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. was hospitalized last month after falling ill during a dinner in Philadelphia hosted by the Federalist Society. The Supreme Court justice was treated for dehydration at a local hospital on March 20 and returned to Virginia that evening, according to court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe.

Alito had attended a daylong conference at the University of Pennsylvania Law School before the evening event at the National Constitution Center. The 76-year-old justice, who has served on the court for nearly 20 years, was examined by his personal physician and returned to work the following Monday. He participated in oral arguments and court proceedings in the weeks following the incident.

Supreme Court justices are not required to disclose health information, and disclosure practices vary among the nine justices. The incident occurred amid speculation about Alito's potential retirement and whether President Trump might secure a fourth Supreme Court nomination. Alito has been considered one of the court's most conservative members alongside Justice Clarence Thomas, particularly after initially aligning with Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. during his early years on the bench.
