Is Andy Beshear the Next Bill Clinton?

Is Andy Beshear of Kentucky the next Bill Clinton? He has twice won Kentucky, a state, and this year posted the highest approval rating among governors. His state handed Donald Trump a 31-percentage-point margin in 2024, yet Beshear's approval exceeds Mitch Mc Connell's by more than threefold, offering a blueprint for a party struggling in flyover country.

Beshear credits his success to focusing on prosperity. 'Eighty percent of my time I spend on things that matter to 100 percent of my people,' he says, citing new factories. He advocates English on difficult topics: 'Could you imagine saying, 'I'm sorry you lost your loved one to substance use disorder'? They'd say, 'I lost my kid to addiction.'' On culture wars, he vetoed a 15-week abortion ban, proclaimed Pride Month, and banned conversion therapy for L.G.B.T. youth, avoiding condescension toward working-class voters.

Some call his messaging disciplined to the point of predictability, yet many voters welcome that steadiness after chaotic cycles. Beshear invokes his church-deacon background and grandfather minister to frame faith and empathy. Positioned in the Democratic middle ground—not a Joe Manchin clone—he could offer the party a pragmatic path back to the White House, appealing to independents and working-class voters.
