Illinois Senate Primary: Stratton vs. Krishnamoorthi Tight Race

Illinois voters face a rare open Senate primary that will almost guarantee the Democratic nominee a seat in the fall. The field includes Lt. Gov. Julianna Stratton, Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Representative Robin Kelly. With both seats held by Democrats since 2017, the race carries high stakes for the state’s political balance.

Recent surveys show a tight contest. Stratton leads by as little as two points in three independent polls, while Krishnamoorthi tops a separate poll by 11 percentage points. The former enjoys Pritzker’s endorsement, and a conservative‑funded poll still leaves over ten percent of Democratic voters undecided a week before the vote.

Polling in primaries is notoriously volatile. Only twelve surveys have appeared this year, and most come from campaign‑aligned groups that release results selectively. Demographic slices are small, and turnout hinges on perceived competitiveness, especially in a state where the last open Democratic Senate primary occurred in 2010.

Krishnamoorthi’s strength among older voters and in Cook County suburbs could offset Stratton’s edge in Chicago and the Black vote. If Stratton cannot consolidate those bases, her path narrows. The outcome will shape Illinois’ Senate representation and set the tone for the party’s national strategy.
