Global Entry Program Restarts After DHS Shutdown Pause

The Trump administration will restart the Global Entry program on Wednesday, just weeks after it paused the expedited travel program due to a partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The program, which allows pre-screened American citizens and legal permanent residents to bypass regular customs lines, had been suspended to "refocus department personnel on the majority of travelers." Travelers pay a fee and undergo vetting to retain the privilege for up to five years. The move reverses a previous pause of the program, which the DHS had previously encouraged Americans to join, citing the value of their time.

The department blamed Democrats for the shutdown while Democrats demanded changes to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations as a condition for funding the department.
