Glacier Park Bear Fatality First in 25 Years

Anthony Pollio, a 33-year-old hiker from Florida, became the first victim of a fatal bear attack at Glacier National Park in over 25 years. Park officials confirmed the surprise encounter that claimed Pollio's life occurred while he was hiking to the Mount Brown Fire Lookout. His body was discovered approximately 50 feet off the trail last Wednesday, three days after he was last heard from.

The tragic incident marks only the 11th bear-related death at Glacier since its establishment in 1910, with the previous fatality occurring in 1998. The park, home to nearly 1,000 bears including both black and grizzly populations, maintains the highest grizzly density of any continental U.S. park. Multiple trails remain closed as rangers continue investigating the area for bear activity.

This fatal attack coincides with separate bear incidents at Yellowstone National Park, where two hikers suffered injuries from what appears to be a female grizzly with cubs. The increasing number of wildlife encounters in popular national parks underscores the importance of bear safety protocols for visitors navigating increasingly populated wilderness areas across the mountain west.
