GKN Aerospace Plant Leak Forces 40,000 Evacuations in Orange County

Tens of thousands of residents in Orange County, California, faced evacuation orders Friday after a tank holding methyl methacrylate at GKN Aerospace's Garden Grove plant began deteriorating, putting communities at risk of explosion or toxic spill. The leak at the aerospace engine and landing gear manufacturer forced roughly 40,000 people to leave their homes as officials warned the situation could escalate rapidly.

Firefighters discovered the tank's valve had sustained damage, which prevented them from accessing it to mitigate the hazard. Incident commander Craig Covey stated the tank couldn't be secured and warned it would either fail and spill up to 7,000 gallons of toxic chemicals or detonate, potentially triggering additional failures at nearby tanks also containing hazardous materials.

The disruption forced the closure of more than a dozen schools and created significant operational challenges for GKN Aerospace. A company spokesperson confirmed the situation remained ongoing and that they were coordinating with emergency services, while roughly 15 percent of residents within the evacuation zone had not complied with orders by Friday afternoon.
