Investigators in Tampa recovered human remains from a waterway near I‑275 and Fourth Street North while searching for missing doctoral student Nahida Bristy. The remains, still un‑identified, were found alongside evidence linking a former University of South Florida enrollee to the case. Police disclosed the discovery on Sunday, in the early morning hours, intensifying a multi‑agency hunt that began after Bristy and her classmate vanished on April 16.

The second student, Zamil Limon, was located Friday on the Howard Frankland Bridge, about 20 miles southwest of the university campus. Authorities arrested 26‑year‑old Hisham Abugharbieh, a former roommate, charging him with two counts of first‑degree murder and several ancillary offenses, including unlawful handling of a dead body, false imprisonment, and evidence of tampering. Motive remains unclear.

The combined response of Hillsborough and Pinellas sheriffs underscores the pressure on local universities to safeguard graduate students amid heightened security concerns for the two doctoral students. With the Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office now processing the unidentified remains, families await closure while the university confronts potential reputational fallout. The case adds fresh scrutiny to campus safety protocols across Florida’s research institutions and funding that could affect future grants.
