Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared at a three‑hour Senate hearing on July 29, refusing to answer questions for the entire session and invoking his Fifth Amendment rights. The former U.S. public health chief had been subpoenaed by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to explain his oversight of the COVID‑19 response and the virus’s origins.

Senator Rand Paul led the committee and released more than 1,000 pages of Fauci’s diaries, alleging that the scientist destroyed records and misled the public. Paul accused Fauci of damaging trust in the Centers for Disease Control and of recommending questionable social‑distancing measures.

Fauci, who retired in 2022 at age 85, said the hearing’s purpose was to trap him into self‑incrimination. President Joe Biden had pardoned Fauci in 2025 for actions dating to 2014, but Paul argued the pardon does not shield him from charges related to later conduct.
