Andy Green, a 64-year-old retired Royal Air Force pilot from Britain, set a new land speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle, reaching more than 406 miles per hour. Green is already the only person to have broken the sound barrier on land, a feat he accomplished in 1997 driving Thrust SSC. \n\nThe record attempt took place on a dry lake bed in the southwestern United States. The vehicle, named the HAV-7, is powered by hydrogen fuel cells and achieved the speed over a measured mile.

Green described the experience: “The ground comes at you very, very quickly.” \n\nPrevious attempts with hydrogen-powered vehicles have faced technical issues, including fuel delivery and stability at high speeds. This record marks a significant milestone for sustainable propulsion in land speed racing. The team plans to attempt even higher speeds in future tests. \n\nGreen’s achievement underscores the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source in extreme performance applications.

The record is pending official certification by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile.
