DOJ Plans to Drop Fraud Charges Against Gautam Adani

The U.S. Justice Department is reportedly preparing to drop federal fraud and bribery charges previously leveled against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani. These charges, brought by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn during the final weeks of the Biden administration, alleged an “elaborate” scheme harming U.S. investors. The reversal follows a concerted defense effort.

Adani’s new legal team, featuring Robert J. Giuffra Jr., one of President Trump’s personal lawyers, culminated in a meeting at the Justice Department headquarters last month. During this session, Giuffra reportedly presented evidence suggesting prosecutors lacked sufficient proof and jurisdiction to sustain the case, utilizing approximately 100 presentation slides to make his arguments.

Adding an unusual element to the defense, Adani’s team offered the government a pledge: if the charges were dropped, Adani would invest $10 billion in the American economy and generate 15,000 jobs. While prosecutors stated this investment offer would not dictate the final decision, sources indicate the offer received a positive reception from at least one senior DOJ official present at the meeting in Washington.

This developing situation signals a major shift from the original indictment which accused Adani of corruption and fraud.
