Rescue workers and volunteers raced to clear rubble and search for survivors in Colombia after the country was struck by its strongest earthquake on record. At least 181 people died and more than 1,300 were injured, with over 3,000 reported missing. The 7.4-magnitude quake struck cities across western Colombia shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time Monday, sending panicked residents into the streets.

In Pereira, one of the hardest-hit cities, volunteers combed through collapsed buildings. "It's so sad to see the whole city like this, knowing that there may still be people alive under there," said Juana Marin, 25, who joined dozens clearing rubble by hand. President Abelardo de la Espriella, only three days in office, declared a state of emergency and mobilized the military and police.

In Cali, rescuers formed human chains to remove debris, stopping to listen for signs of life. Andres Felipe Mejia described a moment when rescuers asked anyone trapped to whistle, and someone whistled back. Around 1,600 buildings were damaged or collapsed. The Vatican said Pope Leo XIV is "deeply saddened," and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced $15.5 million in emergency relief. The EU and other nations also offered assistance.
