Colin Allred ousts Julie Johnson in Texas House runoff

Colin Allred defeated incumbent Representative Julie Johnson in a Democratic runoff for a heavily Democratic Dallas-based House seat, completing a roundabout return to Congress. Allred, who represented the district for three terms before losing his 2024 Senate bid to Ted Cruz, is now the clear general-election favorite in a district redrawn to consolidate Democratic voters.

Allred entered the race after withdrawing from his second Senate run, ceding to Jasmine Crockett, a Black congressional colleague who won Black voters. The House contest turned ugly, with Allred attacking Johnson over stock trades she attributed to an independent broker, while Johnson called him ineffective. Allred spent nearly three times as much money as Johnson throughout the campaign.

The outcome reflects how Texas Republican redistricting last year pushed Dallas-area Democrats into safer seats, shifting what was once competitive territory into a reliable Democratic district. Crockett endorsed Allred after losing her own Senate primary, helping consolidate Black voter support he built over three House terms.
