Brooklyn Arrest Video Triggers NYPD Investigation

Footage posted online on Tuesday shows two Brooklyn narcotics officers repeatedly punching, kicking and dragging a man during an attempted arrest. The videos, captured inside a Cobble Hill liquor store, sparked immediate outrage and prompted Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to label the images “deeply disturbing.” Officers were promptly stripped of weapons, placed on desk duty and sent to the department’s Internal Affairs bureau.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the conduct on social media, calling it “extremely disturbing and unacceptable.” The two officers believed they were targeting a suspect in a crack‑cocaine sale, but the man identified by witnesses as Timothy Brown was later found to have no link to the drug transaction. Prosecutors announced they will not pursue charges, and Brown received only a court ticket.

The incident adds pressure on the NYPD to review use‑of‑force protocols and could fuel calls for civilian oversight, issues that have already affected the department’s budget negotiations with the city. With the officers now on administrative duty, the department faces heightened scrutiny from lawmakers and advocacy groups, underscoring the immediate need for transparent disciplinary action and public trust in the borough and across the city.
