Broadway Play Achieves Record Profit

"Giant," the Broadway play starring John Lithgow as Roald Dahl, has recouped its $5.6 million investment in just 10 weeks—a rare feat on Broadway where most shows take longer to break even. The play, focusing on Dahl's controversial remarks while criticizing Israel, outgrossed every other new production this season with an average ticket price of $175.

Producers announced this financial success despite the sensitive subject matter. The production ran with only seven performances a week during its early run, making its profit turnaround even more remarkable. Most Broadway shows require eight performances weekly to recoup costs, yet "Giant" achieved this milestone faster than nearly any comparable new play in recent memory.

The commercial success comes alongside critical acclaim, with the play receiving four Tony nominations including best play. This achievement demonstrates that commercially viable theater can tackle complex topics, challenging the notion that provocative content necessarily limits financial success. The producers plan to extend its run until June 28 and will screen a live-capture of the production in theaters worldwide this fall.
