Britney Spears was charged Thursday with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, a misdemeanor, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office said. Officers observed the pop star driving fast and erratically on March 4 before arresting her on suspicion of DUI. She is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in Ventura County Superior Court.

Prosecutors noted she will have the opportunity to reach a plea deal allowing her to avoid jail time. Such arrangements typically involve probation, a DUI class and a fine, especially when defendants voluntarily enter treatment. About a month after her arrest, representatives said she had voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility.

The legal trouble comes years after her 13-year conservatorship ended in 2021. In her 2023 memoir "The Woman in Me," Spears wrote that her drinking had never been "out of control" and described Adderall as her "drug of choice." Recent Instagram posts showing her disheveled with bandages on her hands and wrists had raised concerns among fans.
