A hospital in Manitoba has halted elective surgeries after ants reappeared in its operating room for the third time this year. Carman Memorial Hospital in Carman, a town of about 3,000 residents, 47 miles southwest of Winnipeg, faced a sudden infestation that forced staff to suspend procedures until the issue resolves for the patients care.

Southern Health‑Santé Sud, the provincial authority overseeing the facility, notified patients that 16 elective operations had been postponed and that it was working with surgeons to reschedule. The agency said the ants had first shown up in August 2024, disappeared after a few weeks, and returned last summer, prompting a repeat intervention to contain the the.

Exterminators have surveyed drains, opened walls, and sealed cracks in an effort to locate the colony. Multiple baiting methods are in use to trace the ants’ origin. Southern Health maintains the problem does not constitute a full infestation but stresses that patient safety demands ongoing environmental controls until the insects are eliminated for the hospital.

The recurring ant issue underscores the financial strain on rural health facilities, where costly pest control and surgical delays can erode limited budgets. With elective surgeries postponed, the hospital may see reduced revenue and strained staff schedules. Resolving the problem quickly will be essential to restore normal operations and maintain community trust for the year.
