Two Democrats and two Republicans have taken the top spots in Alaska’s crowded open primary for governor, according to The Associated Press. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, a Democratic former state legislator from Sitka, Alaska, finished first with 22.5 percent of the more than 164,000 votes cast. Close behind was Tom Begich, a Democratic former state lawmaker from Anchorage and singer-songwriter with a rich political family legacy, who finished with almost 21 percent of the unofficial vote tally.

He announced Friday night that he would exit the race, believing a single Democrat had a better chance at winning. The final two candidates projected to advance are Bernadette Wilson and Dave Bronson. Mr. Kreiss-Tomkins, at 37, would be the youngest governor in state history. Ms. Wilson, the leading Republican vote-getter with 10 percent, emphasizes resource development and Permanent Fund dividends. Mr. Bronson, a former Anchorage mayor and retired Air Force pilot, has touted his experience running the state's largest government and will remain in the race. The November general election will use ranked-choice voting to determine the winner.
