AI Hallucinations Cost Oregon Winery Family $110K in Legal Battle

A bitter inheritance dispute at Valley View Winery in southern Oregon has resulted in one of the largest penalties ever imposed for artificial intelligence misuse in legal proceedings. The case centered on four siblings fighting over their late mother's 80-acre vineyard, with the two youngest brothers ultimately retaining control after their sister's case was dismissed.

The conflict escalated when Joanne Couvrette and her attorney, Steve Brigandi, submitted multiple court filings containing bogus AI-generated citations. These included irrelevant references to aggravated murder cases and free-speech rulings that had nothing to do with winery contracts or estate law. Magistrate Judge Mark D. Clarke described the submissions as "a notorious outlier in both degree and volume" of AI hallucinations.

Brigandi was fined nearly $110,000, while Couvrette faced personal dismissal of her case. The judge found evidence suggesting Couvrette herself may have written the offending briefs using AI software that "seemed to be learning about her" from other cases. The winery, which produces about 12,000 cases annually, now faces nearly $1 million in legal bills from the five-year battle.
