Warren Probes MrBeast's Crypto Plans for Kids

Senator Elizabeth Warren has demanded detailed explanations from MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) about his financial services venture targeting children. In a 12-page letter, the Massachusetts Democrat questioned Beast Industries' acquisition of Step, a banking app planning to promote cryptocurrency to minors. Though no wrongdoing was alleged, Warren pressed 20+ questions about regulatory compliance and Evolve Bank & Trust's turbulent history, including its 2024 cyberattack and ties to bankrupt Synapse Financial Technologies.

MrBeast's crypto ties deepen the scrutiny. In 2021, he bet $1 million on Bitcoin and invested in CryptoPunks NFTs, which yielded 20-30x returns. Beast Industries filed a trademark for "MrBeast Financial," mentioning crypto four times. Step had quietly abandoned plans for teen crypto accounts after backlash over resources encouraging minors to pressure parents into crypto investments.

Evolve Bank's troubles compound concerns. Its new CEO, Bob Hartheimer, pleaded guilty to child pornography charges earlier this year after a 2024 cyberattack and regulatory actions. As a non-bank fintech partner, Evolve holds customer funds, raising risks if another partner like Synapse collapses.

Beast Industries claimed its goal is "improving the financial future of the next generation," but Warren's letter underscores the legal tightrope fintechs walk when targeting youth. Competitors like Robinhood and SoFi already offer crypto to adults, but minors' involvement introduces unprecedented regulatory challenges.
