The Trump administration slapped new tariffs Friday on dozens of countries over alleged forced‑labor violations. Duties range from 10-12.5%, replacing President Donald Trump’s temporary 10% global tariffs that expired at 12:01 a.m. ET the same day the new ones took effect.

The measures cover 60 trade partners and account for 99.4% of U.S. trade, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said. It declined to estimate revenue, saying the action is the most sweeping labor‑rights move the U.S. has ever taken.

The tariffs will not stack on top of existing Section 232 duties on steel and aluminum. Trump has long touted tariffs as revenue generators and leverage tools, while brushing aside consumer‑price concerns. The White House already imposed 25% tariffs on most U.S. imports from Brazil and 50% on a wide range of goods from Canada.

Earlier this year, the administration faced legal setbacks, but has now re‑energised its protectionist agenda. The new tariffs are brought under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, following the Supreme Court’s strike‑down of the global duties.
