Restaurant Slump: Slop Bowls Lose Appeal as Prices Soar

Restaurant chains like Chipotle, Sweetgreen, and Cava are experiencing declining sales and traffic as consumers pull back on dining out. The trend, dubbed the fading allure of 'slop bowls,' reflects growing customer fatigue with pricey healthy bowls that once drew long lunch lines. Prices for restaurant meals have climbed 22 percent since 2022, outpacing grocery inflation at 17 percent.

Consumers like Brittany Graham, a California customer-service manager, have cut back visits, finding it cheaper to cook at home or buy from local businesses. Chains are reluctant to slash prices, instead testing limited cheaper options like Chipotle's $3.50 chicken taco while promoting premium proteins for affluent diners. Sweetgreen is exploring 'entry-level pricing' for its bowls, testing wraps under $15 amid a 76 percent stock decline over the past year.

Rising costs for beef and produce complicate discounting efforts. Chipotle has raised prices nearly 25 percent over four years, while Sweetgreen's climbed almost 20 percent. Despite challenges, Cava's basic chicken bowl remains priced at $12.95 in Manhattan, with CEO Brett Schulman noting strong performance in lower-income neighborhoods. The industry faces a delicate balance between maintaining margins and attracting budget-conscious diners in an era of shrinking restaurant spending.
