Prius Lineage Traced to 1900 Porsche Hybrid

The Toyota Prius, pioneer of modern hybrid technology, traces its conceptual roots to the Lohner-Porsche Semper Vivus of 1900. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche at age 24, this early hybrid featured a gasoline engine driving a generator that recharged batteries — a series hybrid architecture still used today. Remarkably, the Semper Vivus also incorporated regenerative braking, capturing kinetic energy during deceleration to recharge its battery pack.

Built for Austrian coachbuilder Jacob Lohner, the vehicle used hub-mounted electric motors integrated into the front wheels, eliminating transmission losses. Two De Dion-Bouton gasoline engines powered separate generators, providing electricity for the motors and battery charging. The system delivered roughly 56 horsepower and achieved nearly 40 miles per gallon — impressive for its era.

Though only a handful were produced, the Semper Vivus demonstrated core principles that define modern hybrids: electric propulsion, onboard generation, energy recovery, and battery buffering. Porsche later refined the concept for Mercedes and Auto Union, but the fundamental architecture reappeared a century later in the Prius, validating the vision of an engineer whose name would become synonymous with performance.
