Parent PLUS Loan Consolidation Deadline Approaches June 30

Millions of parents face a critical deadline to consolidate their parent PLUS loans by June 30 to maintain affordable repayment options. The federal government strongly recommends applying by April 1 to ensure processing time, though the formal deadline remains June 30. This urgency stems from major changes to the federal student loan program enacted last summer.

Parent PLUS borrowers must consolidate their loans into a new direct student loan to qualify for income-driven repayment plans. Without consolidation, loans shift to a new standard repayment plan with potentially higher payments and lose eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. The government processed 3.6 million parent PLUS borrowers with $115 billion in loans by the end of 2025.

Borrowers who miss the deadline face significant consequences. New parent PLUS loans issued after June 30 automatically enter the standard repayment plan without income-linked options. The Education Department maintains there are no current system backlogs, but processing times could extend if application volumes surge. Financial experts advise parents to act quickly despite the April 1 recommendation, as consolidation applications may still be processed after that date.
