Nike announced Thursday it is cutting approximately 1,400 jobs, mostly from its technology department, as the athletic giant continues restructuring its operations for a turnaround plan. This marks the second round of layoffs this year for the world's largest sportswear company, which has struggled with years of sales declines.

The cuts span North America, Europe and Asia, affecting workers at Nike's Beaverton, Oregon headquarters and its tech center in Bengaluru, India. They also touch Air cushioning factories and raw material supply chain teams. CEO Elliott Hill is realigning the company around performance sports after years of overemphasizing lifestyle products. In March, Nike told investors sales would fall this year, hurt by weakness in China.

These layoffs represent the next phase of a larger restructuring that's already seen corporate staff reductions last year and approximately 800 distribution center jobs cut in January. Converse is also shifting engineering resources nearer to its manufacturing facilities. COO Venkatesh Alagirisamy said the moves aim to accelerate technology deployment and strengthen supplier relationships, emphasizing the company is pursuing "more speed, simplicity and precision" in its operations.
